Mama did not buy it. She was on prophesy mode and that day
would be her crowning day in her brief but deadly career in prophesy.
“So young like the mother, but you will never be as cowardly
as your father who couldn’t tell his mother the truth.” Mama stared at her
grandson with so much sorrow in her eyes, and with her last strength she raised
him and threw him towards the open window.
Time didn’t freeze like it is supposed to in times like
this, it went on fast-forward. Vivian dived towards the window to save the
infant taking his first flying lessons. Deji was stunned. Luckily, the boy’s head
hit the window frame and he fell down into Vivian’s protective arms which were
spread out in her mad rush. Odewale didn’t cry, instead he laughed maniacally
and ended it with that smile of his. Vivian fell in love with the boy that
moment. “Mama why, what the hell did you do that for?” Deji shouted
at his mother. He was furious and didn’t care if she had Alzheimer’s - that was
the crown prince.
“You fools, he will kill his father and marry his mother.
Kill the boy, kill him now and send the mother far far away.” The nurses on duty had rushed in and when
they saw mama spewing out prophesies, they rushed out even faster. Nobody
wanted to be the next casualty.
“Mama you are not well, you don’t know what you talking. We can’t
kill a harmless baby.” Vivian had tears in her eyes now as she was ready to
defend this boy with her life.
“You’re lucky you are not his mother. He will get his mum
pregnant and kill his father. If you had any sense left in you my dear, you
would strangle that baby right now.”
Deji
had stormed out of the room into the nurses’ cubicle screaming at them for
allowing his mum watch too many bad nollywood movies. And as Vivian left the
room she heard Mama say, “remember that smile my dear when the time comes
remember that smile, it will save us all”. She did remember the smile but it was way too late, like
ordering for pizza and getting it two months later. It was way too late, the
damage had already been done.
Mama died quietly about three months later. The burial was
without the fanfare and pageantry you would expect from a woman who had given
birth to a bunch of power drunk, money choking oil thieves. She had attempted
to kill the new head, so any wise family member stayed far away from her.
Contrary to what most people may think, she didn’t die sad and lonely. She died
with all her senses and almost at a full recovery, and she kept telling
everyone who cared to listen, “remember that smile”.
Things
took a turn for the worse from then on. After Mama died, the prophesy wasted no
time in revealing itself like a complex 5 X 5 Matrix equation. It was only a
matter of time before everything fell into place. After Mama’s death Bola
morphed into the queen bitch of the federation. She woke up one day to family
members who had scores to settle with Vivian filling her head with how she is
the queen mother. It didn’t take long at all. When Odewale was about a year old, his real mother
walked in the front door and his step mum walked out the same door with the
last shreds of her dignity and luckily for her, also her sanity. Vivian was
kicked out of her matrimonial home and Deji married Bola. Vivian was the only
one who escaped as she went on to live a very quiet and average life, until she
was called upon again when the prophesy bubble was about to burst.
