7 keys to wearing sneakers with a suit.

DRESSING DOWN YOUR SUIT isn't the easiest style move, but it is one of the best ways to get the most out of your investment and break out the timeless jacket-and-trouser combo on the daily. One of the best ways to integrate a suit into your everyday rotation is to wear it with sneakers.

Passing over leather wingtips does leave a lot of room for error, though, which is why we're here to guide you. To kick it off, here are seven key styling tips:

1. THE SAFEST ROUTE. When pulling off this look, make sure that your footwear is as tailored as your clothing. Opt for relatively streamlined low-tops. That's not to say high-tops can't work — a sleek pair such as these are an ideal example —, but low-tops are the equivalent of baby steps in the suit-with-sneakers world.

2. SOMETIMES YES, SOMETIMES NO. If you're going to a wedding, job interview, or funeral, break out your leather dress shoes. Your clothing should always match the traditional dress code of the situation you'll be encountering. Wearing sneakers with a suit is a good way to freshen up a traditional style, but remember that the former does dress down the latter.

3. GET COLORFUL. Don't feel confined to white canvas sneakers. A black leather or two-tone pair will look just as good when worn with a navy or gray suit.
4. THE RIGHT SUIT. It's tougher to pair sneakers with a pinstripe power suit than it is to wear 'em with an inherently more casual number (like beige twill, windowpane check, or tweed). With that being said, gray (both dark and light) and various shades of navy will always work.

5. THE ACCOUTREMENTS. You can always fall back on a crisp white Oxford and solid tie (or no tie at all). But if you're feeling adventurous, try a gingham or similarly patterned shirt. Since the sneakers add a casual flair to the suit, it's easy to dabble in more "laid-back" button-downs.

6. WHITE SHOES WITH WHITE LACES... are the most foolproof, suit-friendly sneaker in the entire universe and its surrounding galaxies. (But still don't forget point number three.)

7. LOOK BEYOND THE BUTTONS. Expand your under-jacket options to sweaters (v- and crewneck) and even a solid t-shirt under a cashmere cardigan. This look is all about enhancing the versatility of suiting and putting a fresh spin on a classic look, which the rest of your outfit should reflect.
